Republic Services and All Service Refuse Sponsor Unique Play
Local Schools Learn History Lesson
FORT LAUDERDALE, FLA., November 11, 2005– Created to educate,
entertain and inspire people of all ages and backgrounds, “The
African-American Portrait Gallery: Discovering Timeless Heroes,” brings
history to life by featuring important figures in African-American history.
Larry Robinson is the star of the one-man show. Mr. Robinson’s character is
Bill Carver, a security guard at the portrait gallery and a descendant of
the late George Washington Carver, a famous African-American inventor and
educator. The audience members are taken on a tour of the gallery, a tour
like no other. “Bill Carver” takes you back in time as he tells the stories
of these heroes in the first person—emerging from behind the portraits in
costume and character as the African-American heroes themselves.
The show has been well received by over 20,000 audience
members since its debut in February 2004. Dr. Donna Goldstein, well-known
author and life-coach, is the producer of the project and has begun to tour
the play across the country.
Republic
Services and their local hauling company, All Service Refuse, have already
sponsored this event for over 600 schoolchildren. “The African-American
Portrait Gallery” will be presented at two more Broward county schools this
year. Fourth and fifth graders at Miramar Elementary will see the play on
Monday, November 21. Sixth graders at Bair Middle School in Sunrise will
see the play on Thursday, December 1.
"It’s such a pleasure to bring this play to the school
children across Broward County," said Nancy Bretas, Manager of Corporate
Communications. "The students are eager to see these heroes brought to
life. The reality makes quite an impact on them and when “Bill Carver” goes
out in the audience they are eager to participate. This play is so unique
and we’re proud to be a part of it.”
On hand
to host the festivities will be Republic Services, Inc. Vice President of
Communications, Will Flower. “Broward County is home to our Corporate
Office. As such, we believe we have a responsibility to participate in the
community. Some of the ways that we showcase our community involvement is
with educational programs, environmental awareness and cultural diversity,”
said Flower.
